You will need to download and extract the source code of hydra using wget to a directory of your choice. You can use your Kali Linux system for that. Once you have downloaded the source code, you need to compile it. You can do that by using the make command. Be sure to specify your location for the make command before you run it.
You will need root privileges to install these packages. If you don't have root privileges, you can download the packages from the Kali Linux distribution and install them on your Linux system. Just be aware that you might need to configure some of the packages first before they can be used by Hydra.
Running make will build the target version of hydra. You can check the version by running hydra -v. The build-release target will also build the version available from the repository but it will not run the hydra-server binary that you have just compiled. You will need to install and run this binary as well. Let's now install the binary version of hydra. You can do that by using the make install command. The make install does not create a complete installation.
Hydra comes with the command line version of Hydra which is simple to use. It lets you execute commands on remote hosts in the active network. This is a secure way to perform vulnerabilities checks. You will need to run Hydra with root privileges so that it can access the remote hosts. You can always enter the password when you are prompted for it.
Like any other Linux application, you need to install the prerequisites for Hydra to compile and run. These are:
GNU make
GNU gawk
GNU sed
GNU awk
GNU cut
GNU sort
GNU find
Now you can go ahead and install Hydra on Windows using the msys2-get-install.exe file. If you installed cygwin on windows you can also use the command git which will pull in the dependency package automatically.
The command ./msys2-get-install.exe --install --quiet hydra will install hydra on your Windows system, it is silent and does not show any information to the user. To use hydra you need to first run the command ./msys2-get-install.exe --install --quiet hydra to install hydra on your system. Now you can run hydra to test it, do a scan with it and follow the instruction provided on how to verify and use it.
Now that you have Hydra installed and working, you can be used to brute force as many services as you can manage. hydra is extremely versatile, it can support more than 50 protocols and even scan internal services.
So that should be it, if I try to connect to that host with a VNC client I should get a connection, you can use that connection to use the password that you brute forced with hydra. But we are not done here, we are only scratching the surface, you can also use hydra in a brute force attack by issuing the command: 827ec27edc
