The update will download and install in the background while you use your PC to do other things. The installer will check to make sure you have enough disk space, that your apps and devices will work with Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, and that you have all the required updates. In some cases, the installer might find something you need to take care of before you can continue installing the update. If so, you'll see a message telling you what you need to do.

Depending on your version of Windows, you'll need the following amount of available drive space on your PC to download and install the Windows 8.1 Update or Windows RT 8.1 Update (KB 2919355) from Windows Update:
If you're using an ARM64 machine, please download the ARM64 package instead. If you're not sure what kind of machine you have, open Command Prompt or PowerShell and enter: systeminfo | find "System Type". Caveat: On non-English Windows versions, you might have to modify the search text, translating the "System Type" string. You may also need to escape the quotations for the find command. For example, in German systeminfo | find '"Systemtyp"'.
There are some scenarios in which you may not be able (or want) to, install WSL Linux distributions using the Microsoft Store. You may be running a Windows Server or Long-Term Servicing (LTSC) desktop OS SKU that doesn't support Microsoft Store, or your corporate network policies and/or admins do not permit Microsoft Store usage in your environment. In these cases, while WSL itself is available, you may need to download Linux distributions directly.
Once the distribution has been downloaded, navigate to the folder containing the download and run the following command in that directory, where app-name is the name of the Linux distribution .appx file.
Once the Appx package has finished downloading, you can start running the new distribution by double-clicking the appx file. (The command wsl -l will not show that the distribution is installed until this step is complete).
Disk images for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 can now be accessed through our new Download Tool. In this article we share some tips and tricks on those Windows ISO files, and point to alternative sources that Microsoft provides for these operating systems, in addition to the ISO downloads.
Using the Media Creation Tools is not as comfortable as the direct download through our downloader, since these tools download individual source files, and then build the disk image on your local computer. Using the media creation tool provides no real advantage, but I'm including them here just to provide a full list of download options.
The Media Creation Tool will let you choose the bit edition and language version you require. It will give you the full choice on versions that are available from Microsoft. The previous restriction that only allowed download of the same language and bit edition as the current system no longer exists.
If you don't want to spend any money now, but still have a look at the final release of Windows 10, you can download a 90 days evaluation version of Windows 10 Enterprise. The previous release Windows 8.x is no longer available for evaluation.
You can use these keys to install Windows now, for example with an ISO download, and purchase an activation key after 30 days. Re-arming the trial period is no longer possible as of Windows 8, therefore, after the initial 30 days' trial period the installation becomes useless until you enter a valid product key.
If you prefer to hold a physical disk of Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 in your hands, you can buy one from an online retailer such as Amazon. Both systems are quite affordable these days, and Amazon's A-to-z Guarantee ensures that you receive your money back in case you receive a counterfeit product. A Windows key is always valid for all language and bit versions of the same edition, therefore, don't worry if the product is not available in your desired language. You can still activate any ISO download of the same edition. Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 are both available from Amazon, eBay and other vendors in a Home and in a Professional edition:
The update is finally ready for download and you can either wait until Windows Update downloads and installs the new files for you automatically, or you can download and install Windows 8.1 Update yourself.
Microsoft is ending extended support for Windows 8.1 on January 10, 2023. That means those of you still running the old operating system after that time will no longer be able to get security fixes, technical support, and other types of updates or assistance. For that, you will need to install Windows 10 or 11. Fortunately, there are ways you can directly upgrade from Windows 8.1.
At the screen that asks what you want to do, select Upgrade this PC now and click Next. The Window 10 download then kicks off. Make sure the edition of Windows 10 that you want to install matches the one for Windows 8.1 (Home vs. Pro, for example), then accept the license terms.
Select or confirm the language, OS edition, and architecture (32- or 64-bit). The next screen then asks which media you want to use. Select ISO file, then click Next. Choose a location on your PC to download the ISO file and click Save. After the ISO file is generated, click Finish.
In File Explorer, navigate to the folder where you downloaded the file. Right-click on it and select Mount from the menu. From the mounted files, double-click setup.exe to begin the upgrade. A screen for installing Windows 10 will appear.
Click Change how Windows Setup downloads updates, then select the Not right now option and click Next. Review the license terms and click Accept. At the Ready to install screen, confirm that the upgrade will install Windows 10 and keep your personal files and apps. Click Install and allow the upgrade to proceed.
Open File Explorer and navigate to the folder where you downloaded the file. Right-click the downloaded ISO file and select Mount, then double-click the setup.exe file to begin setup.
Even if your Windows 8.1 PC does qualify for Windows 11, you may still run into obstacles trying to upgrade directly to the latest OS. In that event, one option is to first upgrade your computer to Windows 10, then try updating to Windows 11. This may sound like a clumsy route to take, but it can circumvent any problems you encounter in a more direct upgrade.
Fortunately, a user found a direct download link to the Windows RT 8.1 Update 3 update package. I have tried to install it on my Surface RT, but it ended up searching for Windows updates endlessly. I find out that many users also experience this problem like me. I decided to start from scratch by resetting my Surface RT once again. And this time, I can do it, and the Start menu is back on my Surface RT now.
After you have installed all the above packages, now your problems with checking for the Windows update loop are fixed. You can now update your Surface directly via Windows Update with no more issues.
